How to get into the creative industry

Tips and advice on how to get the creative job of your dreams

1. Get plenty of work experience

Work experience is important when you are writing a CV or going for a job interview. Work experience should have some relevance to the career you are looking at. Offering to volunteer without pay for work experience will make companies more likely to hire you.

4. Develop your existing creative skills

If you are looking for a creative job you may want to further develop your knowledge on what you already know. Many people will be applying for the same job as you, so to higher your chances you want to be as suitable and experienced as possible. Developing your creative skills could mean taking a weekly class, getting an extra qualification or doing an apprenticeship.

2. Write a good CV

Writing a good CV will make potential employers more inclined to give you a job. Get different people or even a professional to look over your CV. Your CV should include places you've worked, GCSE and any other qualifications you have. Once your CV is finished make sure to hand it out to lots of different companies.

5. Present yourself well

Make sure that you present yourself well to possible employers. Rehearse interviews and practice articulating who you are and what expertise you have. Make sure any pieces of writing you are handing in (such as your CV) are grammatically correct and free of spelling mistakes.

3. Learn fundamental skills - such as driving

Many jobs will require basic skills such as being able to drive. Jobs may need someone to collect products and drive to locations- some might just have bad transport links. Learning skills such as driving, using technology and public speaking seem basic but are essential for some jobs.

6. Apply

Once you feel you have the right skills and expertise start applying for jobs. Remember that you may not get a high paying or high status job straight away but you can work your way up. Also remember, it takes time, you might not get the first job you apply for, apply for a few and learn from your mistakes.
